The Russian aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 shook the world and has caused immense suffering and destruction in the invaded country. All indicates that the war will drag on deep into 2023. Up to now the conflict has been highly dynamic: militarily and politically. Ambitions, objectives, achievements have been as dynamic as the policy of the stakeholders involved. While not a military player itself, the European Union has appeared as a significant actor by aiding the Ukrainian war effort, supporting refugees, sanctioning Russia, and turning Ukraine into one of the candidates for EU membership.

This event was organised to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion, to pay tribute to the defenders of Ukrainian independence, and highlight the European efforts of solidarity and preparations for reconstruction. The event served as an opportunity to take stock of FEPS’ work since February 2022 on the war and its various implications, and impact on European politics and security architecture. In addition, it will outline and promote forthcoming action, and in particular the FEPS-LPP book on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Among the speakers:

  • László Andor, Secretary General, FEPS
  • Stephen Bronner, Co-Director at the International Council for Diplomacy and Dialogue
  • Yuliya Yurchenko, Senior lecturer and researcher in political economy at the Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability Institute and the Economics and International Business Department at the University of Greenwich (UK)
  • André Gerrits, Prof. of International Studies and Global Politics at the Institute for History at Leiden University; member of FEPS Scientific Council

Moderation by Uwe Optenhögel, FEPS Vice-President
